The founder

Pat Day-McCray is the Founder and CEO of Medically Inspired Reading About Challenging Life Experiences (MIRACLE) Online Bookstore, Inc. As a parent that endured the death of her daughter, Pat understands the challenges associated with childhood medical illnesses.  Alicia Y. Day, her only daughter at the time, died at the age of three due to complications related to Short Bowel Syndrome.

At 1-1/2 years old, Alicia was identified as having over 90% of her intestines as being gangrenous and had to have them removed. The surgical procedure left Alicia with a colostomy bag and being told she could never eat food; instead she would have to be intravenously for the rest of her life. The intravenous feedings affected Alicia’s liver causing her eyes and skin to become jaundice. Although her feeding line was concealed by her clothing, Alicia had to deal with countless comments, questions, and stares from children and adults regarding the yellowing of her eyes and skin. It was the unfiltered comments, questions, and stares that motivated Pat to ask:

  • How could she assist families in explaining the comments and stares their children receive due to their illnesses?

  • How could she assist families in explaining to their children …the illnesses, conditions, or circumstances they have without causing them to be fearful?

  • How could she encourage children, families, and community members to become more accepting of children dealing with medical illnesses?

Since Alicia’s death, Pat has continued to address the unspoken concerns of communication experienced not only with children and their families, but with academic and medical organizations as well.  Today, Pat is certified through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as a Grief Coach and founded “A Pathway From Grief” coaching services (www.apathwayfromgrief.com); she is also a “Parent Advisor” to those dealing with child-communicative issues related to life circumstances and trauma. Finally, she is the inventor of, “Therapeutic Dolls” and received a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
